Beginner Guide: Build a Kill Zone That Scales

Winning is less about covering every inch of ground and more about forcing the horde through one layered answer: control, damage, then cleanup.

Tower firing arcs arranged during the build phase

The short version: watch where the horde naturally compresses, place support before that point, aim penetrating damage along the lane, and keep fast cleanup towers behind the main line.

Read traffic before buying towers

Orcs move toward the base in a dense physical flow. Corners, narrow gaps and lanes that merge are valuable because one tower can affect more targets there. During the build phase, use firing previews to aim along a route rather than merely across it. A Cannon shot traveling down a packed lane gets more value than a shot crossing the same lane at a right angle.

Do not spread your budget evenly around the map on the first attempt. Let a run show you where the horde bunches, where it splits and where the first leaks occur. Every win or loss grants upgrade resources, so a failed defense still produces information and permanent progress.

Give every tower one job

ROLE 01 // CONTROL Slow or redirect

Grenade-style slows and Mortar knockback buy time or push traffic toward the main lane.

ROLE 02 // POWER Thin the mass

Cannons and Lasers exploit long lanes, repeated hits and dense targets.

ROLE 03 // AMPLIFY Prepare the target

Flamethrowers and slow effects are strongest just before the main kill zone.

ROLE 04 // CLEANUP Catch the leak

Tesla Coils are repeatedly used behind the main defense to catch scattered survivors.

Build in this order

  1. Find the compression point. Choose the lane where multiple paths become one dense stream.
  2. Place control first. Slow the crowd before it reaches your highest-damage firing arcs.
  3. Aim power through the lane. Align Cannons with traffic and bounce Lasers across reliable flat edges.
  4. Add rear cleanup. Keep Tesla Coils far enough back that they target leaks instead of wasting attacks on the main mass.
  5. Adjust one failure at a time. Move the firing arc or reinforce the leaking lane before rebuilding the entire setup.

Spend permanent upgrades by bottleneck

Early progression feels better when you strengthen a complete defense loop instead of maxing one favorite tower. Buy enough economy and core damage to make each run productive, then improve one control option, one reliable lane-damage option and one cleanup option. The current community consistently values Tesla, Cannon, Gunner and Laser roles, but terrain can move Laser above or below the others.

A useful failure is still progression

The official store description confirms that resources are awarded after both wins and losses. If a late map stalls you, use the run to identify one leak and collect the next permanent upgrade instead of chasing a perfect layout immediately.

Common first-run mistakes

  • Placing cleanup towers in front, where they spend attacks on the thickest part of the horde.
  • Pointing Cannons across a lane instead of down its longest crowded segment.
  • Using explosive knockback where it can throw orcs past another defense.
  • Buying too many tower types before the core towers have meaningful upgrades.
  • Changing every placement after a loss instead of fixing the first confirmed leak.
